Playlist

Rather surprisingly given his taste in silks and essential oils, Tommy likes his music on the industrial end of the spectrum. In The Company of Fellows, we learn that, after working on his house, Tommy has become friends with rock impresario Farlow Bateson, and in the book we experience a set by Pathology of Hate, a band I can best describe by saying that I wrote them as a combination of Skunk Anansie and Tanita Tikaram.

Music features in Tommy’s workouts, where we learn he pumps iron to Rammstein. And Radiohead’s Fake Plastic Trees is central to the plot, unlocking a dark incident in Tommy’s past. And Rosie Lu, of course, is 110% pure rock/goth goddess.

With that in mind, this is part soundtrack, part playlist, and a perfect introduction to the feel of the book (links take you to YouTube)

Radiohead – Fake Plastic Trees

Rammstein – Sonne

Portishead – Machine Gun

Skunk Anansie – Secretly

The XX – Shelter

Nine Inch Nails – Hurt

Marilyn Manson – Sweet Dreams

Iggy Pop – The Passenger

The Kills – No Wow

Blood Red Shoes – I Wish I was Someone Better

Hole – Doll Parts

Nouvelle Vague – Guns of Brixton

Rolo Tomassi – Party Wounds

  1. Radiohead are central to the plot? I want to read this even more now… fortunately I’ve already bought it, so I can. Hurrah.

  2. It’s hard when you can’t quote lyrics, but it wouldn’t be an Oxford thriller if Radiohead didn’t have an important part to play. Great to meet another fan – sadly only seen them once, at Reading in 2009, but they were utterly amazing

  3. Yeah I love them, although I’ve only seen them once too (I did once stand behind Thom in a bank queue though – he’s titchy!) Brilliant band.

I actually like most of that playlist – can’t stand Skunk Anansie though!

  4. 🙂 when I was writing the book I tried to keep the POV consistent by listening to Coldplay’s “A Rush of Blood to the Head” when I was writing Emily’s chapters and Skunk Anansie’s Stoosh when I was writing Tommy’s – I think I fancied Skin, which made the music soud better!
